Why I Made the Switch to Holistic Makeup

Over the last few years, I’ve been transitioning from conventional products to more holistic ones in our home. This has not been an overnight process. Rather than stressing myself out by throwing away all of my products and then trying to find less harmful ones to replace them all at once, as something has run out, I’ve worked to replace it with a better option. And I’ll be honest, just because something is non-toxic or chemical free, doesn’t always mean it works or that I like it. This has been a trial-by-fire process!

Why is non-toxic makeup important?

One common harmful aspect of conventional makeup is the presence of various chemicals. Many makeup products contain parabens, which are preservatives used to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. However, research has suggested that parabens can disrupt the endocrine system (goodbye happy hormones) by mimicking estrogen, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances and leading to other health issues.

These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and can accumulate in the body over time. Long-term exposure to such chemicals has raised concerns about their potential links to various health problems, including reproductive issues, skin irritation, and even certain types of cancer. Additionally, many conventional makeup products contain ingredients like phthalates, formaldehyde, and artificial fragrances, which can also have adverse effects on health and may contribute to allergic reactions or skin sensitivities. That’s a BIG no for me!

What I’m using instead

It’s been a process, but I’m happy to announce that I finally found a makeup brand I love. Araza Beauty is taking the beauty industry by storm by not only creating products that don’t harm, but they actually help heal. They use organic, plant-based, mineral-infused ingredients to craft all of their products.

A few other things to love about Araza:

  • Araza is the first makeup company in the world to become paleo certified. This means that they don’t use legumes, dairy, gluten, grains and anything artificial and harmful.

  • They recently launched the Araza Recycling Program, to help cut down on waste, but to also ensure they’re still able to provide the best packaging for their products. They have a handful of various products that you can save the packaging, you can send it back in exchange for free product!

  • It is a huge passion of my mine to help women that have been involved in sex trafficking, and I have previous experience working to help women in the industry find their way out and start new lives. Araza Beauty partners with The Jonah Project and donates 1% of all proceeds to helping at-risk women and children.

  • They have a color-matching program, so if you send them a photo, they will help you find the color that best matches your skin tone!

  • They offer sample sizes of many of their product so you can try before committing to a full size container! This was a huge selling point for me when I first started using their product a couple of years ago. I was hesitant to fully invest in a product I didn’t know if I would love, so this allowed me to get my color right while also insuring I loved the product!

My favorite products

  • Coconut cream foundation: I love this foundation because it gives even coverage and promotes skin health. It is made with a coconut post-biotic that helps to balance out the skins microbiome, is low PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids), has a natural SPF of 25, and helps to fight inflammation with it’s natural minerals.

  • Mineral-infused primer+finishing powder: I love this product for a more finished look! It helps to eliminate excess oil, and helps my makeup to stay in place all day.

  • Rejuvenating coconut lip color: I’ve never been much a lipstick wearer, but I love that this lip color is somewhere between a lipstick and a lipgloss. There’s nothing more frustrating than attending a holiday party, and applying lipstick over my dry, winter lips. I don’t want to get the color on my chapstick, but I don’t want to apply more color on top of my already dry lips. I love this product because it adds a tint of color while also helping to hydrate my lips!

  • Mango cream color pot: I love this because it can be used as both cheek color and lip color! It goes on super smooth, and blends in so easily!

  • Avocado brow and liner pencil: I typically only wear eye liner for special occasions, but my blonde eyebrows greatly benefit from this! It goes on so smooth and give a wonderfully finished and put-together look without being too intense.

The only gripe I have with Araza is that they don’t have mascara! When I tell you I have loved every single one of their products, I mean that. And I know if they came out with a mascara, I would love it just as much as I love all of their other products.
