My Easy Guide to Supplements

I get asked frequently which supplements I take and which ones I recommend. This can be a tricky question, as I take a bio-individual approach to health and wellness, meaning everyone’s bodies and needs are different. Because of this, there is no one-size-fits-all supplement. With my Nutritional Therapy clients, I always take a food-first approach to wellness. This doesn’t mean that I don’t recommend supplements on occasion to help with certain deficiencies, but I always recommend getting as many nutrients as possible from whole food sources. And with the supplements I take frequently, I always try to make sure they come from whole food sources. One my favorite and most trusted brand is Perfect Supplements, so you will see them mentioned in here a lot. They also have their Black Friday sale coming up this week, November 13th-16th, where you can get 25% off of all Perfect Suplement brand products! I’ve also provided a coupon code at the end of this post so you can get an EXTRA 10% stacked on top of the 25% discount! 😉

Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is responsible for numerous functions like skin health, hair, nails, joint health, digestion, and so much more. Collagen production actually starts to slow down in your 20’s, which is I always recommend anyone over 20 to start implementing highly gelatinous foods into their diet, like bone broth. You can very easily make your own, or I recommend powder bone broth for a quick and easy process.

Even with my weekly batch of bone broth, I still take grass-fed collagen to give me that extra boost. I add one scoop into my coffee every morning, and sometimes I’ll add it to baked goods and other recipes. I also love to use grass-fed gelatin, which is just cooked collagen, to make recipes like gut-healthy gummies and homemade marshmallows.

Beef liver

One thing we’ve been incorporating in our diets a lot is beef liver. I used to think liver was just a nasty part of the cow (and to be honest, the flavor still isn’t my favorite), but I was blown away when I learned all of the benefits! Grass-fed beef liver is high in vitamin A, iron, vitamin B12, and amino acids. Whenever my clients ask if they should be taking a multivitamin, I point them in the direction of beef liver! I try to buy grass-fed beef liver from a local farm to mix into our ground beef dishes, but when that isn’t an option, I always have desiccated beef liver powder in my pantry to add to meals. I find that when I add it to dishes with seasonings or sauces, I can’t even taste it. But if that still isn’t your thing, you can also find it in capsule form to help get it down a little easier.

Acerola powder

Vitamin C not only aids the immune system, but it also helps the body fight off free radicals, is needed for collagen production, helps the body absorb iron and other nutrients, and more. Because it’s getting colder, and sickness is on the rise, you might find yourself reaching for Emergen-C packets. We avoid supplements like Emergenc-C because of ingredients like synthetic vitamin C, added sugars and natural flavors. Instead, we keep Acerola powder on hand for an extra immune boost. Acerola cherries have actually been found to have 50-125 times the amount of vitamin C of oranges! We add just a little bit to our beverages to help keep us well!

Magnesium

It is estimated that 70% of Americans are magnesium deficient. Yikes! Chronically low magnesium can lead to insulin resistance, immune dysfunction, and disorders related to inflammation, and a whole other slue of problems! Because of this, I freuently recommend that my clients focus on getting enough magnesium. Here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate magnesium:

Those are my favorite and most used supplements - be it in whole food or supplement form! Like I mentioned earlier, Perfect Supplements is having their Black Friday sale November 13th-16th where you can get 25% off of your order. And as promised, my code JENNTAYLOR gets you an extra 10% off! This means you can get up to 35% off! I know I’ll be stocking up on all of my favorites!
